The North Light Artist's Guide to Materials and Techniques
Phil Metzger
North Light Books
Nonfiction, Art
*****

DESCRIPTION: Oils, acrylics, pastels, egg tempera... today, art stores are chock-full of different media for the artist to choose from. But how to choose? What is each one good at, and how do they work? This book outlines the pros and cons of a wide variety of mediums, with notes on workability and various techniques.

REVIEW: I love paging through this book. It's so interesting to see just what each medium can do. This is a newer book, so some of the recently-developed art materials are listed and rated - quite favorably, for the most part. The book provides useful information like this for all of the media it covers. Even though it looks like it'll be quite some time before I have anywhere to use anything more complicated than ball-point pens and #2 pencils, I still recommend this book to any artist who wants to see just what's out there.
